A more sustainable and socially responsible public transport

16 September 2025

As Austria's largest bus company, Österreichische Postbus AG plays a central role in the country's public transport system. With almost 2,500 buses and over 200 million passengers per year, 70% of whom are schoolchildren, Postbus bears a social responsibility like no other company. The company serves more than 1,600 municipalities, including rural areas without other public transport connections.

In 2012, Postbus faced a turning point: The fleet needed to be modernized with digital systems to increase efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and create a better driving experience for drivers and passengers.

The Solution

Following an international tender, Thoreb was selected as the main partner for the digitalization of the entire Postbus fleet.

The solution includes:

  • Eco & Fuel Management System (EFMS) in all buses – supports drivers in fuel-efficient and comfortable driving.
  • Real-time data from the vehicles and associated web-based reporting tools.
  • Passenger information via displays, announcements, and infotainment systems.
  • Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) systems.
  • Integration with the Zelisko ticketing system, the IVU planning system, Postbus SAP, and vehicle component diagnostics.
  • 3G/4G communication for constant connectivity.
  • Installation of additional systems: BirdView, CCTV, Thoreb Alert, Media Cloud, and other digital services.

The first major project involved 2,400 buses with a contract value of approximately €12 million.

The Results

By implementing EFMS and real-time monitoring, Postbus achieved significant improvements:

  • Reduced fuel consumption and idling.
  • Raising driver awareness of the impact of their driving style on economy and the environment.
  • Improved passenger comfort.
  • Increased operational safety and faster response to technical deviation.
  • Better decision-making through reporting and analytics features.

The Partnership

The journey has not been without challenges. Early in the project, issues with CAN and FMS installations from certain bus manufacturers were identified. Thanks to close collaboration and open dialogue between Postbus and Thoreb, the issues were resolved, and trust was strengthened.

In 2019, the collaboration was deepened with a new framework agreement, valid until 2027 and covering over 2,500 buses. The agreement includes additional solutions for external destination displays, infotainment, real-time reporting, and troubleshooting tools – a testament to a partnership that has grown over the years.

Summary – A long-term collaboration for sustainable mobility

Thoreb’s role at Österreichische Postbus AG demonstrates how technology and sustainability can be combined in practice. Together, we are driving a development in which buses are not just a means of transport, but part of a larger ecosystem for environmental efficiency, safety, and social benefits.

With Thoreb’s solutions, Postbus is well prepared for the demands of the future – and the journey continues.
